CSI DIVISION 26 — ELECTRICAL
Electrical Estimating Services in New York
Electrical estimates with service, distribution, feeders, branch circuits, lighting, devices, fire alarm and low voltage — counted, measured and priced for New York electrical contractors.
QUICK ANSWER
What Is an Electrical Estimate?
An electrical estimate calculates the materials and labor for a building’s electrical system — service entrance, switchgear, panels, transformers, feeders, branch wiring, conduit, boxes, devices, lighting fixtures, controls, fire alarm and low-voltage systems — usually expressed with labor hours per item.
New York electrical work requires licensed electricians, utility coordination with Con Edison or other utilities, and code-driven requirements that affect both material and labor.
Key Facts
- Best for: Electrical contractors, GCs, engineers
- Deliverable: Counts, runs, materials and labor hours
- Turnaround: Usually a few business days; rush available
- Formats: Excel + PDF + marked-up plans
OVERVIEW
Electrical Estimates From Service to Devices
Electrical estimates involve thousands of components. Our estimators count fixtures and devices from plans, measure conduit and wire runs, take off feeders from riser diagrams and panel schedules, and price gear from equipment schedules.
We estimate electrical work for residential, commercial and industrial projects, including electrification upgrades, EV charging and solar-ready infrastructure.
Electrical is part of our MEP Estimating Services and coordinates with HVAC, mechanical, plumbing and fire protection.

ESTIMATING GUIDE
How Electrical Quantities Are Measured
Every electrical estimate starts with the right unit of measure. These are the units our estimators use, so quantities line up with supplier quotes and your own pricing:
- Devices and fixtures: each by type
- Conduit: LF by size and type
- Wire and cable: LF by gauge
- Panels and gear: each
- Feeders: LF from riser diagrams
- Labor: hours per unit
Common Electrical Estimating Mistakes We Prevent
- Counting devices but missing the boxes, rings and connectors behind them
- Measuring horizontal runs only and missing vertical drops
- Overlooking feeders shown only on riser diagrams
- Leaving out utility coordination and temporary power
Each takeoff is checked by a second estimator under our Estimate Accuracy and Quality Policy.

Electrical Cost Factors in New York
Licensed Electricians
NYC requires licensed master electricians to file and supervise work.
Utility Coordination
Utility service requests, meter work and lead times affect cost and schedule.
Electrification
Local Law 97 and new gas restrictions on new buildings increase electrical loads.
Union Labor
IBEW labor is common on commercial projects in the city.

FAQS
Electrical Estimating: Frequently Asked Questions
Direct answers for New York contractors and owners. More on our Frequently Asked Questions page.
What does an electrical estimate include?
An electrical estimate includes the service entrance, switchgear, transformers, panels, feeders, branch circuits, conduit and wire, devices, lighting and controls, fire alarm and low-voltage rough-in, with labor hours assigned to each item.
How do you count electrical fixtures and devices?
Every receptacle, switch, fixture, sensor and device is counted from the plans by type and symbol, then checked against the legend and fixture schedule.
How are conduit and wire lengths measured?
Branch runs are measured from the plans and feeders are taken from riser diagrams and panel schedules, with allowances for vertical drops, home runs and terminations.
Do you include labor hours in electrical estimates?
Yes. Each item carries labor units, which are totaled by system and priced at the applicable New York rate for union, open-shop or prevailing wage work.
Do you estimate fire alarm systems?
Yes. Fire alarm panels, initiating devices, notification devices and wiring are included when they are part of the electrical contractor’s scope.
Can you estimate EV charging installations?
Yes. We estimate chargers, conduit, feeders, panels, trenching and load management for garages, parking lots and multifamily buildings.
Do you estimate electrical service upgrades?
Yes. Service upgrades for homes and buildings adding heat pumps, induction cooking or EV charging are a common request, including utility coordination allowances.
Can I order an electrical estimate separately from MEP?
Yes. Electrical can be ordered on its own or combined with mechanical and plumbing through our MEP Estimating Services.
